We are big fans of BBQ in our home. BBQs in the summer, BBQ sauce, BBQ chicken pizza, BBQ spare ribs and more. A nice pile of meat, covered in barbecue sauce, is always a hit with my family and a great way to please a hungry crowd. I love to make this simple 2 ingredient BBQ sauce, with brown sugar, as it is very straight forward, cheap and I can whip it up in just a few minutes.

You can make this entire BBQ sauce recipe in under 10 minutes from start to finish and it’s going to be using store cupboard ingredients that you will likely already have at home.

I love to make my own sauces, marinades and seasoning mixes. This is a great way to improve the range of flavours that you have available for quick dinners using just a few store cupboard ingredients.

If you’re someone who enjoys a spicier BBQ sauce then you can add a splash of hot sauce. If you want more ideas of what to add into your brown sugar BBQ sauce when see below.

I love how versatile this BBQ sauce is as you can make a classic base and then jazz it up with honey, paprika, white wine vinegar and more. Smoked paprika brings an extra hit of flavour also. I love to serve this with my air fryer pork schnitzel.

This White BBQ Sauce Recipe is something a little different if you’re looking for something a little different and want to have a few options to present at your family BBQ.

15ml white wine vinegar or 15ml apple cider vinegar

15ml honey or hot honey

1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon smoked paprika or 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or garlic granules

Salt and pepper to taste

How to make 2 ingredient easy BBQ sauce:

Combine together the tomato ketchup and brown sugar in a small saucepan.

Whisk together while heating gently for 6-8 minutes. You’ll find the sauce begins to thicken in this time and it’s ready to serve when it has thickened up.

If you want to add in some of the optional extras I recommended then I typically do this 1-2 minutes before serving.

Enjoy with your favourite meats, vegetables and more. I have used this for a variety of recipes and you can see some suggestions below. This works great as a dipping sauce too.

How to store leftovers:

Personally I love to use a mason jar. They look nice, which I think really adds to food when you’re serving it to guests, and it can just be kept in the fridge and used within 3 days. An airtight container of any type will work just as good so use what you have.

You could freeze leftovers in an ice cube tray too and just take out a little as and when you need. Alternatively, if you’ve got large amounts to freeze then you could place it in a ziplock bag, press it down as flat as possible and freeze it that way. Then you can just break off a portion in line with your needs.

Can you use BBQ sauce for ribs?

Personally I have used this for slow cooker BBQ ribs and Ninja Foodi BBQ ribs. Both of these are delicious, full of flavour and a real hit at family gatherings.

What can I use if I don’t have BBQ sauce?

These are a variety of other sauces that will work if you don’t have the ingredients to make this 2 ingredient brown sugar BBQ sauce. Hoisin sauce, teriyaki sauce, tomato ketchup, mustard sauce or garlic and herb dip are all delicious marinades and sauces.

Is BBQ sauce just ketchup and sugar?

While this recipe is made from tomato ketchup and brown sugar you can definitely mix it up by adding in some additional items to improve the flavour.

Worcestershire sauce brings umami, the brown sugar has sweetness and the smoked paprika is a rich depth. Alternatively use cayenne pepper if you want to bring that extra flavour with some heat too.

Is homemade BBQ sauce better?

Absolutely! Partly because this homemade barbecue sauce recipe is super easy to put together – ideal if you’re making a BBQ for your family and realise you don’t have BBQ sauce in the cupboard. Also, you’ll know exactly what is going into your sauce which is always a bonus.

I love it when I am hosting a BBQ and get compliments on something that I have made myself. It’s always a nice moment for me as someone who enjoys hosting gatherings.

How to use BBQ sauce on a BBQ

Personally I love to cook my meat, almost entirely, to get that lovely char that comes from using a BBQ. Then I will brush the BBQ on for the final few minutes of the cooking time.

This is a great way to get the lovely deep flavour of the BBQ sauce, without risking burning the item you’re wanting to cover with sauce.

If you’re using something that cooks fast, like little smokies or cocktail sausages, then you can marinade them in the sauce and cook from raw to save a little time or effort.

Can I use white sugar instead of brown sugar for BBQ sauce? 2 ingredient bbq sauce without brown sugar:

Personally I love the flavour that brown sugar brings, but if you’re in a pinch then the same amount of white sugar can be used instead. You may not get quite so much depth to the flavour, but it’ll still be delicious.

Other delicious seasoning blends I love to use with BBQ sauce:

Meats and vegetables that work great with this BBQ sauce:

Chicken, pork and beef all work great. Especially when you’re grilling or smoking them.

Chicken wings, prawns and halloumi also go great.

I’ve used this as a glaze for gammon joints and roast pork joints too.

Personally I love to make vegetable kebabs with bell peppers, courgette (zucchini), red onions, white onions and cherry tomatoes. These are delicious when grilled on the BBQ and then covered with the BBQ sauce 2-3 minutes before serving.
