I absolutely love to serve up a tasty hot breakfast on the weekend as a treat for my family. With the Ninja air fryer I’m able to whip up a batch of homemade air fry bacon and cheese turnovers in under 15 minutes including prep time.

My eldest daughter loves Greggs, and this is one of her favourite items that they sell in store. I’ve been cutting down on takeaway spends in the last year or two, and have taken to making some of our favourite items at home. Fakeaway recipes are often significantly cheaper, very easy and a little on the healthier side too. It’s a great way to satisfy cravings too.

You can use smoked bacon, turkey bacon or even Quorn bacon for these, though you may want to adjust the cooking times down a little if you’re using the Quorn or Facon slices, as they will brown off a little quicker.

If you’re looking to tie this in with a slightly healthier breakfast option then I love to make these air fryer chocolate protein oats too. They’re full of flavour, simple to make a delicious. I often enjoy a ginger and turmeric shot with this too for the health benefits.

Ingredients for bacon and cheese turnovers – makes 6:

Ready rolled puff pastry sheet – 320g approx

6 x smoked bacon medallions – trim that fat off bacon rashers if that’s all you have in

50g grated cheese of choice (I use cheddar and mozzarella)

50g cream cheese

1 medium egg

Optional – sprinkle of sage

Bacon, sausage and egg wrap

Method for making air fryer cheese and bacon turnovers:

Remove your puff pastry from the fridge 15 minutes before you wish to use it. This will help to avoid cracking and it’ll roll out smoother too.

Whisk your egg.

Combine the cream cheese and grated cheese in a bowl. Add a pinch of black pepper if you like.

Roll out the puff pastry sheet. Cut this into 6 equal pieces. I slice into thirds and then across the middle to get even results.

Spread the cream cheese and grated cheddar cheese mix equally in the middle of each piece of puff pastry. I like to go diagonal from top left to bottom right corners.

Add one uncooked smoked bacon medallion to each piece of pastry on the top of your cheese mix.

Fold the pastry over. I pull from the bottom left corner to the middle and then from the top right corner to the middle.

Press down on the pastry in the middle to make a seal. Use a fork if you like.

Brush each piece of pastry with a beaten egg using a pastry brush. Alternatively, if you don’t have a pastry brush, pour the beaten egg onto a plate and dab each of the pastries on to the plate.

Place into the air fryer basket. I have a Ninja Foodi dual zone air fryer, and I cook 2 in each basket at a time. This will allow room for them to puff up slightly.

Air fry at 180C (355F approx) for 10 minutes.

Serve with a sauce of your choice. I love a nice latte and a portion of fruit salad with mine.

You could cook these in the oven if you pop them on a baking sheet and cook at 200C for 14 minutes or so.

Want to cook frozen turnovers instead? Need to know how long to cook frozen cheese bacon turnovers?

If you have the Greggs bacon and cheese wraps, and want to air fry them, then I recommend cooking them at 180C (355F approx) for 14-16 minutes. Check at the 14 minute mark, and make sure that you leave sufficient room for good air flow.

With air frying I like to ensure there is lots of room for circulation and then I always aim for dropping the cooking temperature by 20C (68F approx) and reducing the cooking time by 1/2 initially and then going as far as 2/3 of the quoted cooking time. This is a great guide for cooking frozen foods in the air fryer and works very well for me almost every single time.

Is the bacon fully cooked?

The middle is cooked, but a little on the softer side, and the edges are crisp and golden. The texture is the same as the Greggs ones, and that is why they are such a hit with my family.

If you want to ensure that all of the bacon is crispy then I would recommend pan frying for 1-2 minutes before you add the bacon to the puf pastry on top of the cheese mix.

What are the calories in a Greggs bacon and cheese wrap?

Each wrap is around 385 calories for the shop bought ones from Iceland and the calories are the same as the ones that you buy in store from Greggs themselves.

What are the calories in these homemade air fryer cheese and bacon turnovers?

As I made them, using the above ingredients, these are 257 calories.

You could save some calories further by using leaner bacon, milk wash instead of egg wash and a lighter puff pastry. Personally I feel these are worth the premium ingredients and it’s miles cheaper to make them yourself too.
