Crumpets have to be one of my all time favourite breakfasts. I absolutely love crumpets for a simple, cheap family breakfast. It’s a great way to give little ones a hot and tasty breakfast, and there are a ton of toppings. I love to make air fryer cheese crumpets these days, particularly as 4 crumpets sit perfectly in my air fryer basket.

I recently decided to pack my toaster away and see if I could make do using the grill on my oven and my air fryer. I’ve been able to make air fryer toast when I want to make my girls beans on toast for any easy dinner. It has been quite a few months now and I’ve not missed the toaster at all!

I have packed the toaster away in the loft, just in case I change my mind, and if I’ve not needed it in a few more months then I’m going to donate it to someone else as it was a lovely model, I just don’t really have any use for it now.

Crumpets are a great family breakfast, particularly when I want to give my little ones something hot before school or when we’re heading for a family day out. Also, crumpets can be made to feel like a bit of a luxurious breakfast with relative ease, especially with this cheese crumpets recipe.

We love to enjoy crumpets with air fryer baconair fryer sausages or alongside a breakfast grazing platter with air fryer pain au chocolat when we’re feeding a hungry crowd. Sometimes we serve it with air fryer pop tarts too. Crumpets are a great alternative to toast for a fancier feeling full English breakfast too!

Ingredients for air fryer crumpets:

Crumpets of course! I normally use 4 crumpets, and I typically use either the Tesco crumpets or Warburton’s crumpets.

Butter

15g-25g of cheddar cheese per crumpet (I use 25g as I use a single slice of cheese)

Don’t forget your favourite crumpet toppings too (see below for some inspiration).

Method for cooking cheese crumpets in the air fryer:

Pre-heat the air fryer to 180C (355F) for a couple of minutes.

Add the crumpets to the air fryer basket. If you have an air fryer with racks then use one of the lower racks so the crumpets stay away from the element and/or fan.

The main goal is to only have one layer of crumpets, to avoid blocking the air flow around the basket.

Air fry at 180C (355F) for 2 minutes.

Add 25g of cheese (one slice or grated cheese works too) to the top of the crumpets.

Air fry again at 180C (355F) for 2 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!

You don’t need to use any olive spray oil, when cooking crumpets, like I might suggest with other air fryer recipes.

What are crumpets?

If you’re new to the UK, or just expanding your food horizons, then you may be wondering what crumpets are.

Crumpets are these delicious little batter based treats, that taste very bread like, and they are made from a batter of either milk or water mixed with flour and yeast. They are pretty simple to make, using *crumpet rings, however, I almost always just buy them in and then toast them for a simple and fast breakfast.

Can you put cheese in the air fryer?

Yes, absolutely. It does slide off some food quite quickly, and it will make a mess, however, that’s no reason not to do it.

I love to use a little baking paper underneath items in the air fryer when I’m putting cheese on or in them. This means I can clean up easily and I always use a Scrub Daddy to avoid scratching my air fryer basket.

What else works great on top of cheese crumpets in the air fryer?

I personally love to use either a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a little smear of Marmite. If I’m using Marmite I normally put this underneath the cheese itself. If I’m using Worcestershire sauce then I tend to just splash a few drips over the top of the crumpets as I’m serving. Keep it healthy by using sparingly as both of these are high in salt.

If you want something a little different then I love to add a pat of homemade garlic butter (the kind you use for air fryer garlic bread), or serve alongside air fryer bacon, air fryer sausages, air fryer sausage patties or even just with scrambled eggs. Slicing the crumpets into fingers makes them great for dipping into runny eggs too, like a posh eggs and soldiers.

If I want a sauce on the side then I use tomato ketchup typically, or something brown sauce, as these both work really well with cheesy crumpets anyway, whether made in the air fryer or not.
