I am a big fan of using the air fryer to make delicious tasty dinners for my family. These air fryer chicken skewers (or kebobs) are a great way to re-create the takeaway style experience at home without spending a fortune.

What I love about my air fryer chicken kebabs is just how easy they are. I can prep them in the daytime and leave them to marinade in the fridge or I can whip them up right before cooking.

Cooking chicken kebabs in the air fryer is a great way to have a tasty dinner and by using a kebab rack, with metal skewers, I am able to also cook air fryer chips at the same time.

If you are looking to learn how to make your own chicken kebabs in the air fryer or perhaps looking for some inspiration on dressings to use then be sure to read on. Whether you use shop bought sauces or make your own you’ll be able to make some delicious, succulent chicken kebabs in just 20 minutes.

For this recipe I personally love to use my brown sugar BBQ sauce but I have been known to use a shop bought one when I am short on time or low on ingredients.

This particular recipe calls for skinless chicken breasts but you could also use boneless skinless chicken thighs, skinless chicken pieces, ground chicken, air fryer chicken quarters or just about any cut of chicken as long as you can place it on a skewer.

Something to note about air fryer recipes is that all air fryers have different sizes, depths and as such the cooking times can vary. All air fryer recipes on this website are intended as a guide, and not a guarantee that the timings will be perfect. Enjoy!

Ingredients for air fried chicken kebabs:

400g chicken breast (or thigh)

2 white or red onion (your choice)

3 peppers (bell peppers)

150ml bbq sauce (or other sauce of choice)

Salt and pepper

Optional: garlic powder

I love to make air fryer garlic parmesan chicken skewers by combining a mixture of grated parmesan yoghurt and garlic powder or minced garlic cloves.

Method for making my chicken skewers recipe:

Cut the chicken breast lengthways into 1 inch thick strips.

Cut the onion into quarters. Remove the smallest centre pieces.

De-seed the peppers and cut into large chunks, around 1 inch.

Place the chicken into a bowl, add the BBQ sauce (or other sauce) and then place into the fridge for a minimum of 1 hour.

Layer up your skewers. I like to layer chicken pieces onto skewers and then I just continue to layer up like this: pepper, chicken breast, onion, pepper, chicken breast, onion and repeat.

I thread vegetables and then thread chicken onto the skewer and typically finish with vegetables at the other end to keep everything succulent.

I place the chicken on to the skewer in an “S” formation, which I achieve by skewering the bottom of the chicken strip, then the middle folded over, then I fold again and skewer the top of the chicken breast.

I place the skewers in to the Ninja Foodi kebab rack, into the air fryer basket and then air fry at 200C (390F) for 20 minutes. At the 10 minute mark I spray lightly with spray oil to keep them from becoming dry.

You can use wooden skewers, or bamboo skewers, if you don’t have a kebab rack, or don’t want to buy one, but soak them first to avoid them burning in the Ninja Foodi.

Flavour ideas for air fryer chicken breast skewers:

Sometimes I will make one of my dry seasoning mixes up, add a little vegetable oil, avocado oil or olive oil, and then mix together and stir the chicken breast through. You can use shop bought instead no bother!

My favourites are: peri peri seasoning, fajita seasoning, cajun seasoning and Mexican spice blend. I also love to use simple ingredients, such as paprika, when I want something a little interesting that my children will also eat, as they’re lovers of grilled chicken.

Chicken pineapple kabobs are great, and the pineapple brings a welcome succulence. Just buy a tin of ready prepped chunks if you want to save time, drain and then layer in between the chicken and other vegetables.

Serving suggestions for chicken kebabs

I’m a big fan of chicken kebabs alone, as a snack, served chilled from the fridge. I also love to serve them as a dinner with pitta bread or flatbreads alongside hummus, tzatziki or a garlic and herb sauce that I make myself.

For a bulkier meal I will serve with a fresh salad, sometimes creamy coleslaw, Ninja Foodi white rice or even just a nice pile of air fryer chips or potato wedges cooked in the air fryer

A nice wedge of fresh lemon as a garnish works great and is lovely sprinkled over the top right before eating. Fresh herbs are great too and I love to garnish with a little oregano or some thyme leaves.

Sauces and marinade ideas for chicken kebabs

When making my own marinade I will typically keep it simple. A nice dollop of yoghurt with some herbs and spices such as oregano, thyme and paprika all work great and is ideal for leaving in the fridge overnight covered well.

Lemon juice, a little butter, garlic and spices all work great and anything with a Mediterranean flavour is fantastic.

If you want something a little different you could use soy sauce, oyster sauce or teriyaki sauce. I love a nice Asian twist to chicken kebabs when I want to mix it up and if I’m keeping it simple I’ll just serve with good old tomato ketchup, garlic mayo, BBQ sauce or sweet chilli sauce.

Can you put wooden skewers in an air fryer?

Yes you can. Personally I like to soak them in water for around 30 minutes before I use them. This helps to prevent them from burning in the air fryer and is especially important when you’re air frying or oven cooking them at higher temperatures.

Soaking skewers is always a good step before using them in cooking and one that I find works great.

Why are my chicken kebabs dry?

If you overcook your kebabs they are going to dry out, likewise if the marinade that you uses does not contain enough moisture or fat content.

Chicken is a lean meat and as such it is always best to marinate it overnight for maximum flavour and then keep the temperature moderate rather than trying to cook it at a higher temperature for just a few more minutes.

How many chicken skewers per person?

2 of these chicken skewers are usually ideal per person, 3 if you’re extra hungry. The serving size does vary depending on what you’re having it with. I have comfortably enjoyed one of these when I’ve been having it as part of a larger meal with lots of side dishes and a nice flatbread or pitta.
