I adore my air fryer – because it is so convenient to use. It sits up on my kitchen counter so I don’t have to worry about my little ones touching the hot oven and I can cook most dishes faster than in the oven too. These air fryer chicken leg quarters are delicious for a tasty protein packed snack, for tearing apart to use in recipes such as chicken pie and even just to serve with a nice pile of potatoes and veggies.

My home is an air fryer lover’s paradise, as I’ve got an AF400UK double air-fryer from Ninja and an OL750UK Ninja Foodi model too. This means I can batch cook dishes with ease and always have some tasty for my family to enjoy. Any air fryer will do for this recipe – though do keep an eye on the cooking time as they can vary slightly depending on the capacity.

Cooking chicken quarters up can be a great way to have a frugal family meal, or lots of meat to use in dinners. Sometimes I strip an air fryer whole chicken instead.

I find that these chicken pieces are the cheapest on the market usually and most supermarkets sell them too. Best of all they require minimal effort to get cooking and you can have them cooking in the air fryer in just 1-2 minutes.

Personally I love to serve them with air fryer chips, or frozen chips when I’m in a rush. I use the leftover meal in a variety of dishes including cajun chicken pasta, wraps and just with a tasty salad and dressing.

I am a busy working Mum, who loves a hot lunch, so sometimes I make a batch of these up in advance via my meal plan and then I just serve it heated up with some microwave rice and vegetables plus a nice sweet chilli sauce or even an onion gravy

I’ve used these leg quarters from frozen before too as cooked frozen chicken is fast, convenient and there is no waste too.

If you’re short on time these are tasty cold too – ideally with a nice bit of seasoning on. I’ve got a ton of air fryer recipes for you to try out while you’re here.

Ingredients for air fryer chicken leg quarters

600g chicken leg quarters (3 pieces typically)

Salt and pepper

Spray oil or olive oil

Optional – seasoning of choice (see below for some suggestions) – I love garlic powder and onion powder

Method for cooking chicken leg quarters in the air fryer:

Prepare your chicken leg quarters in your usual manner. If you’re a fan of washing your chicken first then do so, and pat the quarters dry with paper towel.

Rub with the oil. Either 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil or you can use a few pumps of spray oil instead to save on the calories or be a little healthy.

You can preheat air fryers if you’d like to, but I only really do this for air fryer ribeye steak.

Place the chicken leg quarters in the air fryer basket.

Air fry at 190C (380F approx) for 10 minutes cook time.

Flip over if you like.

Air fry at 190C (380F approx) for a further 10 minutes cook time.

If you want extra crispy skin then you can turn the temperature up to 210C (410F approx) for an extra 2 minutes.

Check that the internal temperature reaches at least a 71C (160F approx) and is cooked throughout before serving.

What to serve with this chicken leg quarters recipe

There are a variety of delicious side dishes that I love to serve with chicken leg quarters.

Typically I will do a potato dish, such as air fryer mashed potatoes, potato wedges in the air fryer or air fryer hasselback potatoes. Then I will cook up some tasty vegetable side dishes in the air fryer too such as air fryer green beans, air fryer butternut squash or air fryer corn on the cob

Are your chicken legs rubbery?

If you find that your chicken leg quarters are a little rubbery this likely means that you’ve overcooked them. Take 1-2 minutes off the cooking time next time, as all air fryers can vary in cooking time, and then check that the juices run clear and it’s reached a safe internal temperature in the thickest part of the cut.

Can you cook air fryer frozen chicken leg quarters?

Absolutely yes. I’ve cooked lots of frozen chicken in the air fryer in the past and find that a good guide is to add around 40-50% to the cooking time.

Typically I start by adding 1/3 on to the cooking time, and reducing the temperature by 20C for the first half of that time.

Always check that your chicken is cooked through thoroughly before serving. I like to use a *meat thermometer for this as you can’t beat the accuracy of seeing the numbers on screen.

Do you cook air fryer chicken legs with the bone in?

Yes, absolutely. If I’m serving the leg quarters as is then I don’t do anything besides cook them and serve them on my plate.

If I am going to be stripping the meat off the cooked pieces, perhaps for air fryer chicken pot pie or a slow cooker chicken casserole

I’ve got a ton of lovely options you can make in your air fryer and these are some of my favourites:

Why are chicken leg quarters so cheap?

The main reason these are sold so much cheaper than other cuts is they require very minimal processing. You’re buying the cut with fat, skin and bone still in place.

Less processing in the butchery part translates to lower prices at the till most of the time.

What’s the difference between a chicken leg and a chicken leg quarter?

A chicken leg is typically a chicken thigh and drumstick all in one piece. A chicken leg quarter is a thigh and drumstick portion with part of the back attached.

These came out of the air fryer just perfect. For a little spicy kick, I added some smoked paprika to the seasoning.
