Mashed potatoes, easiest thing EVER to make am I right? If you fancy being able to put them on, and not have to watch a pot to ensure it doesn’t boil over, then air fryer mashed potatoes will be perfect for you!
For us mashed potatoes are a real staple. Our 5-year-old will ALWAYS eat them, especially if served with onion gravy (minus the onions though!) and it is a great way to bulk out a meal for a very low cost too. We love to make pressure cooker mashed potatoes but we also love to make these mashed potatoes thanks to the air fryer.
These air fryer mashed potatoes work great as part of a roast dinner, alongside sage and onion stuffing (or air fryer stuffing balls), and a delicious slow cooker whole chicken. Leftovers can be turned into air fryer mashed potato balls and these are absolutely delicious served with air fryer frozen chicken nuggets for a simple meal. Ingredients for air fryer mashed potatoes:
500g baby / first early potatoes
15ml olive oil
Salt and pepper
20g butter
Chives (I used 1 stalk)
Method for making mashed potatoes in an air fryer:
Wash your potatoes and dry thoroughly.
Place potatoes on a piece of tin foil (cooking friendly stuff though!).
Cover with 15ml of olive oil, sprinkle generously with salt and pepper.
Air fryer at 200C (390F) for 20 minutes.
Once the time is up ensure that the potatoes are fork tender. IF not then you’ll want to cook for 3-5 minutes more.
Once your potatoes are cooked through remove and place in a bowl.
IF you don’t want to mash with the skins on then remove these by letting the potatoes cool slightly. I leave the skins on my potatoes, so they are a little more rustic and there are added nutritional benefits to doing so. This is one of the reasons why we also love air fryer potato skins – yum!
Add 20g of butter and mash until smooth.
Season with salt and pepper.
Chop a stalk of chives and scatter on the top.
If you’re serving family style then smooth the top and dab 10g of butter on to give it a nice presentation.
Can you fry potatoes in an air fryer?
Yes! Just follow my method, 20-25 minutes at 200C (390F). This is a really simple way to fry potatoes while making sure the inside are soft and fluffy.
If you want to make air fryer roast potatoes instead then you’ll want to cut the potatoes.
Can you warm up mashed potatoes in an air fryer?
I find that 3-4 minutes, at 200C, is enough to reheat mashed potatoes, however it depends on the quantity. I like to line the bottom of the air fryer basket and spread my creamy mashed potatoes across the bottom.
If you want to jazz them up a little more then add some cheddar cheese or even a little cream! Cream cheese is another great way to make creamy mashed potatoes.
How to make mashed sweet potatoes in an air fryer?
Just follow the same method above but with sweet potatoes. If you have large sweet potatoes then you’ll want to increase the cooking time from 20-25 to 35-40, checking two times during the cooking at least. Give a good shake, and ensure that you have oiled the outside of the potatoes thoroughly.
What to serve with mashed potatoes?
We LOVE a variety of dinners including slow cooker hunters chicken or air fryer sausages and onion gravy. I’ve also used this as a topping for a slow cooker cottage pie filling mix or fish pie with leeks.

What can you make with leftover air fryer mashed potatoes?
If you don’t fancy just serving up some mash then why not make some air fryer mashed potato balls or some air fryer mashed potato cakes. You can even use some mashed potatoes to make pancakes, or to top something like a fish pie with leeks or slow cooker cottage pie.
What sauces work well with mashed potatoes?
In our home good old tomato ketchup is a classic and well loved! We also love BBQ sauce and gravy too. Yum!
