I’m a BIG fan of the air fryer. So simple to use. It is cheaper than heating up the oven and these air fryer roast potatoes were the first ever thing I made in it! They are the perfect accompaniment to a roast dinner, or just as a side dish on a weekday if you want something a little special.

I do have times where I cook frozen roast potatoes in the air fryer, but they just don’t have the same great taste to them! They’re fine for busy Sundays or midweek roasts, but making your own roasties is just so delicious. Keeping frozen foods on hand can be a great way to make a simple and fast family meal – as can having a bag of humble spuds on hand.

My air fryer has been fantastic for me. It helps me to make several different dinners, as my daughters have allergies, and I’ve even got air fryer tips for beginners to share if you want to get the most out of yours too. Check out my best potato recipes too while you’re here!

These go great with air fryer pigs in blankets and air fryer carrots and parsnips too. My Ninja air fryer recipes have to be some of my favourite recipes that I’ve shared here and I use time and time again. I love to use leftovers in these leftover sausage rolls.

I typically cook these air fryer roast potatoes in my Ninja Foodi dual zone air fryer. I love that I can cook potatoes in one side and air fryer stuffing balls in the other side at the same time. The OL750UK is also a great Ninja multi-cooker that I own, which is great for cooking roast potatoes in too.

I love to serve a different variety of meats for my roast dinner including Ninja Foodi roast chicken, Ninja Foodi gammon or Ninja Foodi roast beef. Cooking a whole chicken in the air fryer is a great way to knock up a fast roast dinner too.

See below for my air fryer roasted potatoes recipe, tips, flavour ideas and more.

Airfryer roast potatoes

Ingredients for air fryer roasted potatoes:

600g white potatoes

Vegetable oil (1/2 tablespoon) (don’t use olive oil)

Salt and fresh ground black pepper

Optional other herbs or seasonings: garlic powder or garlic salt, rosemary, Italian seasoning, chopped parsley.

Roast chicken with sage leaves and text overlay that says what to do with roast chicken leftovers

Method for making air fryer roast potatoes:

Pre-heat the air fryer to 180C (355F).

Peel, wash and chop your potatoes.

Drizzle the cut potatoes with vegetable oil and salt and pepper.

Add to the air fryer basket.

Air fry for 15 minutes at 180C (355F). Shake well.

If you’re adding additional herbs, spices or seasonings now if the time to add these.

Air fry for another 10 minutes at 180C (355F approx). Check. If required air fry for a further 5 minutes. You can turn the heat up to 205C (400 degrees Fahrenheit approx) if you want them extra crispy.

Do you need to boil potatoes before putting them in the air fryer?

Using this method I do not parboil. I like to keep it nice and easy. Using my Ninja Foodi roast potatoes method I use the pressure cooker to lightly cook the potatoes. Both methods work great.

This method is designed to be low effort. If you want to parboil first then you can reduce the cooking time by 10-15 minutes in the air fryer, and can potentially get even fluffier edges to your potatoes.

What I love about these potatoes is that in what feels like an instant they’re in the air fryer cooking away and I can get on with making the rest of our dinner.

Can you cook crispy air fryer roast potatoes with no oil?

You can! The air fryer is great at crisping food up, thanks to the small cooking area and the air fryer basket. I’d recommend shaking the basket at least 4 – 5 times while cooking, to avoid the potatoes sticking to the basket.

Obviously they’ll be a little drier than if you used oil, but nothing a bit of onion gravy won’t sort out!

What are the best potatoes for roasties?

I’m in the UK so we tend to have fluffy white potatoes in the supermarket here, which work well.

Really ANY potatoes are great for air frying, they all go super crisp on the outside and fluffy and delicious on the inside.

Baby potatoes work great, especially if you cook them whole and coat them in lovely garlic butter and parmesan cheese upon serving!

Can you cook vegetables alongside your roast potatoes?

I love to add air fryer parsnips to the top, when there are 20 minutes to go. These turn out lovely and crisp too. Carrots work very well too, and if you slice them large enough the cooking time is similar.

Air fryer Ninja roast potatoes, chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes and air fryer pizza with salad and garlic and herb dip - text overlay that says what can you cook in an air fryer?

How do you make whole air fryer potatoes?

Yes! Absolutely. You’ll want to adjust the cooking time though. I’d recommend pricking a few holes in the potatoes, so they can release steam and cook throughout. If you have a metal skewer this can work well placed through the potatoes too, but just check it’s suitable for air frying.

Can you cook frozen roast potatoes in the air fryer?

Yes.

Look at the package for the cook times and temperature. I’d recommend reducing the temperature by 15-20C, and the cook time by 1/3 to start with.

You’ll want to shake at least once during the cooking time, to avoid them sticking, and then again a few minutes before serving.

Any frozen roast potatoes should work well, I really rate the Aunt Bessies ones as they have a nice coating on which crisps up lovely. They’re not as healthy as making your own of course, but not everyone has the time or effort to spare do they!

What are the best potatoes for roast potatoes?

I’m in the UK, so tend to use Russet or Maris Piper, or even just whatever value potato is being sold in the UK supermarkets at the time.

If you’re in the USA then Yukon gold potatoes work very well for this recipe too. Red potatoes are always good if you can find them too, such as rooster.

What herbs work well for roast potatoes?

Personally I love to use crushed garlic, chopped parsley, chopped rosemary, thyme leaves or chopped sage leaves. I love to make rosemary and garlic roast potatoes too.

Something to note about air fryer recipes is that all air fryers have different sizes, depths and as such the cooking times can vary. All air fryer recipes on this website are intended as a guide, and not a guarantee that the timings will be perfect. Enjoy!

How to re-heat roast potatoes:

Leftovers keep well in the fridge for several days, and are easily refreshed in the air fryer if you want to enjoy them hot and crispy again.

I find 6-7 minutes at 180C (355F) is sufficient to heat the potatoes through, and they are almost as tasty as they were on the first serving!

What else works well with these roast potatoes?

Other great accompaniments for these roast potatoes are air fryer bacon, parmesan cheese, garlic butter and paprika are all great sprinkled over the top of these potatoes.

Here are some of my favourite air fryer cookbooks and accessories:

Can raw potatoes be cooked in the air fryer?

Yes absolutely. There is no need to par boil. If you want to speed up the cooking process slightly then boiling the potatoes until fork tender can help with this. It can also help to rest them in their own steam for a few minutes after draining. If you’re short on energy or effort then you can just skip this step and cook your raw potatoes straight away in the air fryer.

It is better to air fry or roast in an air fryer?

Personally I love to use the air fryer or air crisp setting when I’m cooking roast potatoes. The roast setting works well for joints of meat that have been sealed, such as half a leg of lamb or a piece of beef.

Frozen roast potatoes that have been cooked in the air fryer. Served in a white and blue enamel serving dish on a wooden chopping board.

Want to try some alternative seasonings for your roast potatoes?

If you’re wanting to serve this with air fryer chicken mini fillets or air fryer chicken tenders for a simple dinner then I firmly recommend one of my homemade seasoning blends. Peri peri seasoning, cajun seasoning, fajita seasoning or my Mexican spice blend all work great.

What about a lovely dipping sauce?

Nacho cheese sauce, roasted tomato pizza sauce, kale tomato pasta sauce or brown sugar BBQ sauce all work great too.

Cooked air fryer potato skins topped with sour cream and chive dip and spring onions. There is a bowl of sour cream and chive dip in the background also. Text overlay says: air fryer potato skins.

Want to use olive oil instead of vegetable oil?

Personally I don’t use olive oil in my air fryer much, just because the smoking point is typically a little lower. A good extra virgin olive oil would add to the flavour of this dish though and just keep to the temperature of this recipe and you should be fine.

Want crispy roasted potatoes?

If you find that these potatoes aren’t as crispy as they could be then you want to turn the temperature up for the final 10 minutes or so. Depending on the size of your potatoes you may want a few more minutes cooking time.

A white bowl of root vegetable mash with a brushed steel spoon, a pat of butter on the top and a pink waffle tea towel in the background.

There really is nothing like the joy of sitting with your loved ones to enjoy a tasty homemade roast dinner after a lovely family weekend.

I love to serve up homemade roast dinner trimmings, especially as my 7-year-old daughter is a big fan, and it is so satisfying when my family enjoys everything I’ve made myself. The air fryer helps me make lots of delicious side dishes in next to no time too.

My air fryer helps me to transfer the most simple ingredients into stunning accompaniments for my roast dinner that my family love. A batch of these delightful roast potatoes are the perfect way to feed a hungry crowd without spending a fortune.

They go great with just about any meal, including a pile of steaming vegetables, and different trimmings help to keep my family from becoming bored of roast dinners which I always start cooking from September time onwards. The moment it turns cold I’m making a roast!

I looked at your recipe for Roast potatoes. I have the Ninja Air Fryer. Now, this has different programmes including Roast as well as Airfry. Which one would I use?

Hi James! Thanks for stopping by for my recipe. Definitely use the Air Fry function for this. The roast function on the Ninja is usually more like a traditional oven, so you'll not achieve such a crispy result! Hope that helps.

Hiya! Are you using frying chips, or oven chips? Frying chips are possibly (but not an expert here!) drier, as I think they're just designed for being used in oil, rather than without oil, or with limited oil, like oven chips. Oven chips, that are already coated in a little oil or some sort of seasoning usually, are fantastic in the air fryer, so perhaps you could try something different? I hope this helps & you see this, as I have no idea how replies are set up on this website to be honest!
