Making toast in the air fryer is SO straight forward! You may be wondering why bother air frying toast, but it takes as little time as using a toaster, and it is great if you’re looking to cut down on the number of appliances you’ve got in your kitchen.
I’ve been toying with the idea of getting rid of my toaster for quite a while now, and so I’ve been making more air fryer toast and finding that it is super simple to prepare a round of toast for us all to enjoy with breakfast.
What I’ve done, while deciding if I want to get rid of my toaster, is put it in a box up in the loft for now, that way I have it there if I change my mind! It’ll be great to free up that space on my kitchen worktop.
Crunchy crisp toast is something we all enjoy in our family, but with two daughters with allergies, I find that sometimes the toast falls apart a little in the toaster. Using the air fryer makes it much more straightforward and helps me to cut food waste.
We love to enjoy this with air fryer bacon, air fryer sausages or alongside a breakfast grazing platter with air fryer pain au chocolat when we’re feeding a hungry crowd. Sometimes we serve it with air fryer pop tarts too.

Ingredients for air fryer toast:
Sliced bread of course! I normally use 4 slices of sourdough, sliced white or brioche style bread for the tastiest results.
That’s it… Seriously. Surprising I know…! Probably my easiest ever of all my air fryer recipes!
Don’t forget your favourite toast toppings too (see below for some inspiration).
Method for cooking toast in the air fryer:
Pre-heat the air fryer to 200C (400F) for a couple of minutes.
Place the slices of bread into the air fryer basket. If you’ve got an air fryer oven with racks then use one of the lower racks to keep the bread away from the heating element.
The main aim is to ensure that you only have one layer of toast, to avoid blocking the air from flowing around the air fryer basket freely.
You don’t need to use any olive oil, or spray oil, when making toast, like I might suggest with other air fryer recipes.
Cook for 3-4 minutes, turning once during the cooking time.
You may find that your air fryer distributes the air well enough not to really need to turn, but I like to ensure even cooking wherever I can! Especially as it just takes a few seconds with a pair of tongs.
Remove when golden brown. You can adjust the cooking time up or down based on your own preferred toasting. I like a medium – golden brown, which is what the cooking times in this recipe are based upon.
What to serve with air fryer toast?
Some of our favourite serving suggestions are homemade garlic butter, homemade butter, peanut butter, sliced cooked eggs, sliced avocado, bacon, sausages, baked beans, grated cheese or even cutting the toast into toast sticks and serving with dippy eggs as eggs and soldiers.
What other toast types can you make in the air fryer?
I’ve made an air fryer grilled cheese before, that was delicious! Great served with tomato and chilli salsa.
I’m also experimenting a lot lately with making french toast and cinnamon toast style roll-ups. These are both tasty and I’ll share the recipes once they’re perfected!
What bread to use for air fryer toast?
Anything you like will work great. We’ve used gluten free, dairy free, sourdough, wholewheat, garlic bread, sourdough, white, bloomer and lots more. All work great and we’ve never had a bad piece of toast from the air fryer.
Can you toast bagels in the air fryer?
You can! Just about any bread item can be toasted in the air fryer. I love to prep a bag filled with sausage and cheese bagels, with cooked sausage and grated cheddar, and then I’ll add tomato ketchup after heating up in the air fryer for 6-8 minutes. Yum! I lightly toast the inside of the bagels before I freeze them, and then I air fryer them from defrosted in the fridge.

This toast does look good!! It makes sense to use the air fryer instead of the toaster. x
