Five Fabulously Frugal Things I’ve Done This Week – 24th February

Money saving is almost as important to me as money making. I love to be frugal where I can and I find that the smallest changes can add up to big amounts over the year. Being frugal is something that I enjoy, although I’m by no means tight. Being frugal for me is really about looking after my money, and not wasting it, but I don’t deprive myself either.

  • Loving leftovers. I always like to use up leftovers however we are reducing our portion sizes a little. This has helped me drop a couple of pounds already and best of all it means food costs are lower. We had some lovely sausages recently and saved two. We then turned those in to omelettes for the three of us for a cheap and filling lunch.
  • Using our slow cooker. I love my slow cooker, as I’ve said lots before. Being able to use the slow cooker is just so convenient. I turn it on, leave it all day and then dinner is served. It takes me 5-10 minutes to get the slow cooker ready and that is it. Nothing to do until dinner time! Lovely.
  • Batch cooking. I’ve been trying to do more of this lately. Whenever I’m cooking a meal where it is easy to batch cook I try and do so. For example if I’m making chicken fajitas in the slow cooker I just get another bag ready. While there is no actual cooking involved for this it means another days dinner is ready to go. I’ve also made cottage pies for the freezer recently too.
  • Visiting B&M. We have a B&M just a few minutes drive from home. We stopped by on our way back from our in-laws recently. In there we found 30L of cat litre for just £5.59. Compared to buying it in Tesco this saves around £6-7! In just one month! We also saved money on cat food there and Dreamies treats too.
  • Bulk buying animal food. Inspired by the trip to B&M I then looked at bulk buying food for our fish and turtle. We visited a local pet store to get some baby pigs for our turtle and they worked out at just 50p each. This is much cheaper than what we normally pay.

We found treats from Dreamies and some branded cat food too (Purina, Go Cat, few others I think). Worth a look!

Good idea about the slow cooker, I really need to get my act together and try the slow cooker drawer at the bottom of our oven. Would be great to save time and cash!

Yep we always bulk buy our dog food too, it works out so much cheaper. It certainly sounds like you’ve had a frugal week, great to use up leftovers and a really good point about reducing portion sizes, I hadn’t thought about the fact it saves money as well as losing pounds!
