Five Fabulously Frugal Things I’ve Done This Week – 7th April

We’ve had a normal sort of week this week. Work, family commitments and more. We’ve also been able to get down our allotment and get some more work done which has been great. We are just about managing to spin all of the places – just about! This week has been a pretty good one in terms of being frugal and I’m saving up for our holiday in 3 weeks time – can’t wait now. Here is my Five Fabulously Frugal Things I’ve Done This Week – 7th April post. Five Fabulously Frugal Things I've Done This Week - 7th April 2017

Five Fabulously Frugal Things I’ve Done This Week – 7th April

  • Used my slow cooker. This is something that I mention most weeks but it saves us so much money. By using our slow cooker we avoid takeaways on those tired nights. I often get this ready before bed, and place it in the fridge. Then in mid-morning I get it out and turn it on. I have also made some meals for Daisy recently too, things such as sausage casserole. They have been a big hit and so convenient too. If we do want a takeaway I always use Zeek to save a little money.
  • Walked to and from the allotment. We walked over 10,000 steps just going to our allotment, working there, and then walking home. This is great as I’m trying to be healthier. Also, the weather was lovely and it was super relaxing to go out together at a slow pace. Plus we didn’t have to try and park on the big hill near our allotment – that I hate.
  • Returned shoes that I just wouldn’t have worn. I bought a few pairs of trainers and shoes recently. Two of them were a bit tight. I remarked to my husband that I would stretch them out. However, I don’t want to do that really. This probably means they’ll languish in the cupboard for months or years before I sell them. This time I returned them. As they didn’t offer a refund, only a credit note, my husband got some new bits he needed. Then he gave me the money! Win for us both!
  • Re-used packaging to post out eBay items. I sold £50 ish worth of items recently, also I had some competition prizes to send out. I reused some packaging. Also, I used this brown paper that I buy regularly. This is recyclable and super cheap. Plus you can write directly on it so no need for labels either!
  • Harvested produce from our allotment. While down our allotment I harvested lots of herbs. Coriander, sage, lemon thyme, rosemary & oregano were all harvested. Then I froze them in various forms. Sauces, ice cubes and the lemon thyme on the branches. It only took me around 10-15 minutes total time to harvest, wash and prepare them. I’m so glad I made the effort as I buy these herbs regularly. We also harvested three stalks of rhubarb which are going into rhubarb pie.

It has been a good week really. Relaxing at home, lots of family time and feeling grateful for my life. My weeks are quite samey, but in a good way. I do lots of activities that I love and seeing our allotment come to life is brilliant this year. Here is a little look at the rhubarb I harvested:

I love seeing all your yummy allotment fruit/veg – it’s so inspiring to see. Also well done for taking the shoes back. Much better to have the full value in your pocket now than less later on.

Thank you so much – I am really loving the allotment now that I’ve recovered from having Daisy!

You’ve made a good point with returning the shoes – a lot of the time we feel guilty about admitting a purchase wasn’t great and put ourselves through the paces of trying to make the most of it (even though it means inconvenience and/or pain). Much better to make the call and take them back!

So true! I’ve been guilty of this in the past!
