I’m a huge fan of my Ninja Foodi models. I own the AF400UK dual zone air fryer and I also have the OL750UK which is a multi-cooker model. Both of these items make it really easy to cook meals for my family. On the days when I want a quick, simple lunch I love to cook frozen fish pie in the air fryer.
While I am a big fan of making my own fish pie with leeks, or batch preparing meals for the freezer, I don’t always have as much tine as I would like and the Young’s Admiral’s Pie has to be one of my favourite easy meals from my childhood.
This particular frozen fish pie is from Young’s, but the recipe should adapt well for just about any individual sized frozen fish pie. The one I have is fish fillet pieces in a creamy butter sauce topped with mash & cheddar cheese.
It’s light on the calories, at just under 300 per frozen pie, and is perfect for a simple lunch – especially if served with a soft white floury roll or air fryer bread roll.
If your schedule, or energy levels, don’t allow for ‘from scratch’ cooking every night then cooking frozen meals in the air fryer is a great way to cook for just one person and also to speed up the cooking time too. On average I find that cooking frozen food in the air fryer is faster by around 1/3 – 1/2 of the cooking time.
My girls are fans of air fryer frozen french fries and air fryer fish fingers which is perfect for those nights when we’re short on time thanks to after-school activities and clubs.
It will take you just 20 seconds to get this out the freezer and get it cooking. While it’s cooking you’ll have time to prepare for the following day or even get your dinner in the slow cooker for that night.
I love to try and race against my air fryer timer to get as many jobs done as possible around my home. This means I can sit down and enjoy a nice hot lunch knowing my home is tidy and I’m ready for another productive few hours of work in the afternoon.
If you want to you could cook some air fryer vegetable recipes at the same time as this fish pie, just prepare and then drop into the air fryer basket for the appropriate length of time. We love air fryer corn on the cob, air fryer tenderstem broccoli or air fryer roasted tomatoes.

That’s it. Shocking I know…!
Method for cooking frozen fish pie in the Ninja Foodi air fryer (or another model):
Air frying frozen food is really easy, as most items are ready to be placed directly into your air fryer. Frozen foods typically have batter, breadcrumbs, oils or sauces to prevent them from drying out during the cooking time. They may have been frozen with a protective layer of oils or water on to help them stay nice while cooking.
Open your fish pie box, remove the film lid and place the carton containing the fish pie into the air fryer basket. Set your air fryer to air fry at 200C (395F approx) and cook for approximately 18 minutes.
Before serving I checked my fish pie with a temperature probe at the 14 minute mark as the top was starting to look quite brown and I was worried it was going to overcook. It was only HALF the required safe temperature. However, in the next 4 minutes it came up to temperature and exceeded it well into the safe zone.
There is no need to turn this or do anything else to it during the cooking time. Perfect simple meal!
Check the fish pie is piping hot throughout when serving.
Personally I love to mix my fish pie with a spoon so that all of the crispy topping mixes with the soft fish and sauce for a lovely tasty fish pie with a little bit of everything in one bite.
There are a huge variety of frozen fish pies, if you buy one of the ones that are a little deeper and thinner you’ll probably want to adjust the cooking time.
Want to cook a frozen fish pie you’ve pre-made?
I love to batch cook and sometimes I’ll make some individual fish pies up. If I’m cooking my own fish pies I usually will cook for an extra 5-7 minutes, as these are quite deep, with lots of extra filling, and therefore need more cooking time to be thoroughly cooked through to a safe temperature.
Do you have to turn fish pie in the air fryer?
No, there is no need to stir it, turn it around or do anything else. The air fryer should cook your food nice and even.
Is frozen fish pie already cooked?
Many fish pies are made with either flash frozen or partially cooked fish. You want to only cook a frozen fish pie one time, do not re-heat.
Packaging in the UK usually will just say ‘fish pieces’ or ‘pieces of pollock’ and won’t say whether it has been previously cooked or not.
Do not re-freeze if defrosted either for safety reasons.
What to serve with fish pie:
- French stick
- Garlic bread
- Spring greens or air fryer green beans
- Air fryer carrots and parsnips
- Sage and onion stuffing balls
