Late last year my husband and I decided to give Gousto a try. We had seen a number of online adverts and wanted to have some simple meals on hand during a time when I was rather unwell. We tried the service a few times and today I am going to share my Gousto review with you.
Gousto is an online recipe box company that will send you meals in the post. You will receive all, or almost all, of the ingredients that you require for an agreed recipe. You can choose to order for 2 or 4 people, and our box was based on 2 people. Every week they have new recipes and they can cater to meat eaters and vegetarians.

This is what your box will look like when it arrives…
This was the inside of the first box that I received. The left side is a package containing all of the chilled goods (meat, Crème fraîche etc) and the right side is the ingredients that did not need to be kept ice cold while travelling.
My box arrived on the quoted day, quite early in the day. This meant that I was not worried that it wouldn’t arrive and I could promptly unpack it. Within the packaging there was packaged wool, to keep everything cool.
There were also Gousto ice bags, which were still frozen solid when my order arrived. All of the goods in my order were at a great temperature and I was not worried about the temperature at all.
These are the ingredients that I received within my box. This was the ingredients for 4 recipes, for 2 people. As you can possibly see the ingredients are organic (the orange squash wasn’t part of the box!).
These are the recipes that I personally chose on the website before receiving my first box. When choosing the recipes I was able to see what items, if any, I would need.
Mostly it was just cupboard items such as plain flour, salt, pepper and olive oil. We are meat eaters so we went for beef stroganoff, cheesy chicken pie, potato cakes & beans (with bacon) and asian pepper chicken.
Choosing the recipes was great as it allowed me to see, before I paid for the order, that I would get everything I needed. This was ideal for planning meals on a busy week when when I was ill.
As we were due to head off on holiday at the end of the week it was one less worry for me. It also allowed me to avoid having excessive food in the fridge and meant we had no wastage before we went away for the week.
Each of the recipes is portion controlled, and the recipe cards also have the timings and cooking instructions for each meal. In my experience the timings are generous and each time we were able to cook the recipes in slightly less than the quoted time.
I felt very confident using the recipe cards and didn’t even worry about reading them through in advance. Each of the recipes looked similar (but not perfect!) to what was on the card and best of all they tasted fantastic.
Here are the ingredients for the cheesy chicken pie. The recipe card talked me through the recipe and even the smaller ingredients were provided in measured pots. The recipe was very straightforward to follow and I felt confident making this.
I loved that it had a little dressed lettuce to accompany it and it meant that there was something healthy to enjoy alongside it.
This is the finished cheesy chicken pie. It differs a little from the photo because I am not a professional when it comes to serving food! It was cheesy, tasty and delicious. Infact, the flavour was better than I was expecting.
The dressing I was instructed to make for the lettuce was delicious too and it was a nice accompaniment to the meal.
These are the ingredients for the beef stroganoff. The ingredients were great quality and the meat was absolutely fantastic. I could tell that this was not re-packaged cheap meat and I felt happy with the quality before I even served it.
This is the finished result… It was delicious and one of the best meals from our box. The flavour was absolutely delicious and the dish was promptly finished off by my husband!
The only downside was the recipe was quite heavy on the herbs, and this was a little off-putting for me. However I am an accomplished enough cook to know that I should have just cut it back!
My overall Gousto review…
So far I have been really pleased with the quality of the Gousto boxes. We have had a mixture of different recipes now, meat and vegetarian, and we are yet to cook one we don’t enjoy.
I personally have been avoiding some of the recipes that use chicken thigh, as I have found them to be a little fatty, but that is just a small gripe. I’m a very fussy eater, and cook, so I don’t want to have to do much trimming of meat before I cook it.
The boxes have arrived on time, and well packaged. So far I have received a couple of nice little freebies too, such as a canvas bag. This is a nice touch and has come even when I’ve received a box at a significant discount.
I like being able to read the meal cards online and it is great to see the selection on offer each week. The menu is varied and changes frequently too, which is fantastic.
A special offer for my readers
Has my Gousto review made you want to try a box for yourself? Well now you can – at a significant discount!
By visiting my *Gousto link you can get a discount off your first box.
When I signed up my first box, of 4 meals for 2 people, was just £14.99! This was absolutely fantastic value and was a great opportunity to try out the service. It was also less than the cost of one takeaway, which we would have bought that week if we didn’t have meals on hand to prepare where the planning was already done for us.
Did you know that you can get Gousto free gifts?
From time to time when you order a Gousto box they will pop a little free gift in. I’ve had lovely desserts and branded goodies too!
Gousto boxes are a subscription service so ensure that if you do not want another box that you pause or cancel your subscription online. I have done this and now just place a single order as and when I want a box.
