Money Talks with Earning By The Sea

When did you start blogging?

I first dabbled with blogging in 2012. I wrote about parenting and it grew into charity shop hauls with no explanation of what I was doing with the things that I bought. I didn’t know you could talk money and working from home in a blog and people would read it! So that blog lost focus and I shut it down.

I started in 2016 which again is random charity shop hauls and parenting, but it feels right this time.

What inspired your blog name?

I live in Margate, Kent, and the beach is such a big part of living here.

It’s a constant reminder of why I have pushed harder to be self-employed and literally earning by the sea, sat on the beach creating eBay listings or blogging.

What is your attitude to money – are you a spender or a saver?

I am a spender I guess. I work hard and save money where I can so that we can spend it on the things we enjoy.

Lately I find I’m getting excited about investing so I hope I’ll start saving more this year.

What is the best bargain you have ever purchased?

I always mention this one, it’s the Topshop dress I found at a bootfair for 50p and sold on eBay for £120 because Kate Middleton had been wearing the same one.

I had no idea at the time that it was such a great bargain.

What is the biggest splurge you have ever made?

Recently a new MacBook. No regrets.

If you had £100,000 right now what would you do with it?

Buy a house because the stress of renting when you have pets is enough to give me constant palpitations.

If you could go back 10 years & give yourself one piece of money related advice what would it be?

Sort your pension.

What was the last item you purchased?

A Toby Carvery roast with the family.

What is your favourite ever blog post?

It’s my one about starting an eBay business.

10 years ago I said to my Mum that I wanted to find a way to tell people about buying to resell on eBay because it allowed me to leave a job I hated. It had changed my life and I wanted to help others do the same.

My Mum laughed it off and though it’s not a high traffic post it makes me proud that I wrote it.

What is your biggest money regret?

I started a business with my inheritance when my Dad died which was the wrong time so it inevitably failed.

I believe it put me on the path to where I am now so it’s not really a regret and it taught me some tough lessons that I’m grateful for.
