This year I’m trying out something a little different. I’m in a really fortunate position in my life. I get to work from home, making money online. I get to spend time with my daughter every single day. We don’t have to rely on childcare. I’m able to visit my Mum anytime I want. In general I feel really blessed with my life. I almost died last year, and a couple of times before that in previous years, and it has taught me that you shouldn’t sweat the small stuff, well – not much! To celebrate this I am going to be spending 2017 carrying out lots of random acts of kindness.
In the past I have been caught up in drama, listening to rumours and nasty gossip. Now I’m not promising I’m going to be 100% nice from here on in, I mean lets be realistic. The last six months I’ve been so much happier. I’ve cut off people who make me feel negative, I’ve stopped getting involved in big arguments online (you know the ones that happen almost daily – or so it seems). I have just generally avoided negativity significantly more. I feel miles better for it. I’m happier in myself, I’m kinder to others, I help people more and I’m more generous than I used to be.
I wasn’t sure whether I should write about my random acts of kindness in 2017. Then I took a poll on Twitter:
If I write about my random acts of kindness each month or two would that be crass?

Should I post about my random acts of kindness?
As you can see the majority of people wanted to hear about my random acts of kindness, however, 2 people that voted felt it might be crass. I’m all for the majority ruling but at the same time this is mostly about me being nicer, rather than people online thinking I’m nice. That is why I’m going to post on occasion about my random acts of kindness. I won’t be making it a feature on a set day or week. I won’t be listing every single random act I complete, however I will personally be keeping a list to look back on for ideas in the future.
How can you find someone who you can help with random acts of kindness?
I’m trying to find a variety of people and ways that I can commit random acts of kindness. Random acts of kindness don’t need to involve huge amounts of time, or money. Basically random acts of kindness should be carried out to offer something to offers. This could be time, it could be money, it could be something else entirely. I’m also involving my husband after talking to him about why I wanted to do this. Here are a few examples of random acts of kindness we have carried out so far this year:
Donated to the food bank via Tesco
Donated to local hospice (St Clare Hospice)
Gave money to a man who was short of money in the post office
Bought a meal deal and a cup of tea for a homeless young man
Stopped a stranger who was struggling to carry items to give them one of my jute shopping bags
There have been additional random acts of kindness but some of them are along a similar vein (donate to charity, help a homeless person etc). I’m hoping that as well as continuing such random acts of kindness throughout 2017 I can also make an effort to find new ways to help people, including those I love.
I’m really enjoying looking out for ways that I can help strangers. In addition to this I will be doing nice things for the people that I love too. I’ve already made a start on that this month but a couple of the items haven’t gone ahead yet – so I can’t share details right now.
So far I am loving completing my random acts of kindness for 2017. I’ve been able to bring a smile to people’s faces. I’ve been able to carry out some small gestures, such as providing a meal to a homeless person, and some larger ones, such as donating to local charities.
There is a certain amount of gratification. Of course. I’m not going to lie. I feel proud that I can help others and it is inspiring me to work even harder this year. I have so much that I want to achieve before this year is out. Random acts of kindness is just one part of what I want to achieve. I’m planning a few things for later in the year that will allow me to help some of my readers too. I’m yet to iron out the final ideas for this so do feel free to get in touch with me if you have something in mind!
