How to cook rice in a slow cooker – my simple method
Spray oil or rub butter around the inside of your slow cooker pot.
Rinse the rice thoroughly. Very thoroughly!
Pour the rice, your water and salt into the slow cooker pot.
Cook on high for 1 1/2 – 2 hours. Stir every 20-30 minutes if possible to prevent sticking.
Serve! You may want to scatter some fresh herbs over the rice too, if you’re so inclined.
My thoughts on cooking rice in the slow cooker:
This is SO simple. I don’t have to be there constantly watching it, like I do with the hob. As witching hour is quite busy in our home this is a great way to prepare dinner, without having to be available too much.
It takes just a few seconds to stir the rice, and helps me serve a tasty, warming frugal dinner. I also like knowing that if I accidentally leave this for 5-10 more minutes it isn’t going to become stuck to the bottom of the pan, or turn into a charred mess, like it would if I cooked it on the hob.
I do find that sometimes this rice needs a little bit of fork separation, perhaps if I’ve not serve it as much as I should have, or haven’t rinsed it thoroughly before using it.
I have found that sometimes there is a little bit of rice stuck to the bottom of the slow cooker. To remove this I add hot water to the pot and allow it to cook while I eat dinner. Then clean up is really easy. If you want to avoid this you could try a *slow cooker liner. I don’t mind spending a few seconds scrubbing to avoid using another piece of plastic in my home.
